About Kris
A former classroom & college educator, now in your corner one-on-one.
I'm a Florida Board of Education certified teacher with 12 years of professional public-school teaching, and a retired college professor with 12 years of instructional experience in the public college system.
I hold a B.A. in English from Saint Leo University and a Master's degree in Education (M.Ed.) from the University of South Florida. I'm excited about one-on-one instruction, which gives students a tailored learning experience on a regular, recurring basis.
Outside of tutoring, I enjoy traveling, gardening, and music.
- Skilled at building curriculum maps aligned to Florida school district standards
- Always happy to help parents reach out to teachers and make sense of educational jargon
- Customized learning plans tailored to each student's needs
- Enjoys showing students how reading & writing skills connect to real-world careers — like screenwriting and filmmaking — often as a fun way to kick off a lesson
“Reading & writing leads to a world of adventure! I love to travel to places I have learned about!”
— Kris

For Middle & High School Students
Reading, Writing & ELA — How I Help
Below is a small sample of strategies I use to help students build academic skills, organizational habits, and confidence.
Chunking
Students break text into smaller sections to build understanding of the main idea, details, and non-fiction information.
Read On & Context Clues
Students are encouraged to keep reading past unfamiliar words, developing the skill of reading for meaning and vocabulary in context.
Growth Mindset
I teach students to handle failure and learn from mistakes — praising effort over raw intelligence to build grit and perseverance.
Creativity & Ownership
Rather than rote memorization, I use thought-provoking questions, open-ended assignments, and brainstorming to build understanding — plus games, web quests, and interactive storytelling to make reading enjoyable.
Bridging the Gap
For students with an IEP or 504 plan, I incorporate all suggested strategies into our sessions so students succeed in class and gain confidence.
Quick Writes
Students spend 2–3 minutes at the end of a lesson writing a summary of a key concept or noting a lingering question.
Muddiest Point
Students write down the single most confusing concept from the session, so we can address specific gaps right away.
Fun Learning Games
Interactive platforms like Kahoot! and Quizizz test knowledge and motivate students through friendly competition and instant scoring.
For College Students
Composition & Literature Support
I encourage students to look beyond immediate challenges toward future success, building a safe, supportive, and engaging environment where learning feels like a shared journey.
English Composition 1101 (or 1) & Remedial Writing*
Various teaching methods to help build strong writing skills, employ correct structure and grammar, and use MLA format.
English Composition 1102 (2), Remedial Reading*, Advanced Literature, World Theatre & Drama, Victorian British Literature & Shakespeare
I help students see “Literature as a Lens” — shaping their understanding of the major issues, themes, motifs, and ideas that influenced writers of the time.
*Taught during my years as a college professor, prior to retirement — now offered through one-on-one tutoring.
Minute Mindfulness for Stress Reduction: each week, I demonstrate a strategy students can use to reduce stress and bring attention to the task at hand.
A Personal Passion
Literary & Film Travels
A career built on reading and writing can lead you anywhere — I love visiting the real places behind the stories I admire.
Notre-Dame Paris — featured in The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo
Prince Edward Island — featured in Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, who lived there
Massachusetts Coast — featured in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Crucible by Arthur Miller
Puerto Rico — filming location for Batman Begins, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Blue Beetle

First Steps
Getting started is simple.
- Free 15-minute consult — we offer this free, no-pressure conversation to every family to make sure our services are a good fit. Consults that run longer are $20 per 30 minutes.
- Learning-style questionnaire — for younger students, a short questionnaire helps me understand their learning style. High school and college students receive a questionnaire to clarify goals and needs.
- Written contract — outlining hours, fees, and session policies between the tutoring service and the parent or guardian.
Entirely virtual — no extra driving, and all sessions happen from the comfort of home.
For Parents & Guardians
Your role matters, too.
Your role as a parent or guardian is the most important support for your learner. I'm always happy to provide an occasional 10-minute conference to discuss learning issues and assignments.
For weekly items, please send one email a week to the business email with your student's name and concerns — I'll reply as promptly as possible.
